National Award
2010 Catholic Schools for Tommorow Award "Innovations in Education"
This national award will be presented to pastor and principal at the National Catholic Education Association Convention, during the "Today's Catholic Teacher" Reception and Banquet at the Memphis Institute of Arts on April 7, 2010.
Welcome to Our Lady of Peace! From the parish beginning in 1962 pastor and parishioners were and are committed to the ideals of Catholic Education ministry. In this school year pastor, principal, parishioners, faculty, parents and students re-commit themselves as the People of Peace. As a school community we are...
P - prayer;
E - example;
A - academic excellence;
C - collaboration, community, commitment;
E - esteem for ourselves and others!
We embrace our new pastoral leader, Father Dennis Schuelkens, who has given his promise of his presence with our young people.
Ongoing emphasis is placed on educating our students in twenty-first century methods and technology. Edu City, E-Writing Roadmap and Tech 3 Literacy integrate curricular skills and needs with technology resources. This year updated program materials and texts include Math, WV History and elementary Spanish. Our students' success is most evident in national standardized assessments and analysis. Academic life is coupled with the fine arts, sports and fun - a Winning Combination!
The National Catholic School theme "Catholic Schools - Dividends for a Lifetime" reflects lessons learned in faith, knowledge, discipline and morals. In my personal steps in Catholic education as student, parent, teacher, principal I value my own life dividends received in my involvement in each of these roles. As principal of Our Lady of Peace for twenty-four years it is now my privilege to be a part of the lives of my pastor, my teachers, staff and school families. Together we are the People of Peace. Visit through these web pages and then in a personal school visit. Our doors are always open to you.
Peace be with you,
C'Ann Reilly, Principal
Our Lady of Peace Building Bridges
At Our Lady of Peace School, the message can be summed up into one simple statement: "What your child believes is as important as what they know."
Since 1962, its pastors and parishoners have been committed not only to the ideals of Catholic Education ministry, but also to the whole child, expanding horizons and preparing them for success in an ever-changing society of People of Peace. However, to the Our Lady of Peace (OLP) family the word P-E-A-C-E, stands for much more than harmony, as Webster would define. It is Prayer; Example; Academic excellence; Collaboration; community, commitment; and Esteem for ourselves and others.
"Our school exists to provide for the spiritual, academic, social, emotional and physical excellence of our students," said Principal C'Ann Reilly.
The school emphasizes education reaching beyond the traditional classroom.In addition to the core academic curriculum and challenges of language arts, social studies, mathematics, science and health, OLP students are exposed to a variety of experiences to enhance and fully develop their individual interests and talents.
Whether taking on the persona of your American Hero among your primary school peers; sitting down to a "Tea at the White House" with your preschooler host; or enjoying amazing performances of Polynesian fire dancers, while sampling some of the flavors of the region's traditional fare prepared by the middle schoolers; most would say a typical day at Our Lady of Peace School is not "typical."
Cultural arts, visual arts, competitive and lifetime sports, music and community services are all honored disciplines that make up this community of life long learners. What is impressive is that this approach has proven success.
Students at Our Lady of Peace continue to outperform their peers state-wide and nationally on standardized tests, earning scores placing among the best in the nation.
Their measurable accolades are not the only reason the school's population far outreaches its parish boundries. OLP parents and students choose the school, also because of its family-like setting and expectations.
Caring and compassion, fairness and justice, respect for self and others, responsibility, trustworthiness, and Christian citizenship are not only taught, but also lived.
Education belongs before kindergarten at OLP. The pre-school offers both 3-year-old and 4-year-old programs.
Registration for the 2011-2012 school year begins February 15th; Kindergarten screening is Feb. 26; and middle school orientation is March 25.
