Mission Statement

Our Lady of Peace School is a Catholic community of Pastor, Principal, Teachers, Parents and Students in convenant spirit committed to spreading the gospel values of Jesus Christ and providing a quality education. Our school exists to provide the spiritual, academic, social, emotional and physical excellence of our students.

We are called to the Church's mission to teach as we strive to develop the whole person - demonstrating respect and understanding for each child as a special and unique individual. Based on this covenant spirit in Christ's name, we will attain our goal through prayer, commitment, collaboration, example, guidance, faith and trust in God.

Dear Peace Families, Friends, and Visitors;

Welcome to Our Lady of Peace and the 2010-2011 School Year!

OUR FOCUS:

From the parish beginning in 1962 pastor and parishioners were and are committed to the ideals of Catholic Education ministry. In this school year pastor, principal, parishioners, faculty, parents and students re-commit themselves as the People of Peace. As a school community we are...

P - prayer;

E - example;

A - academic excellence;

C - collaboration, community, commitment;

E - esteem for ourselves and others!

Our pastor, Father Dennis Schuelkens, is so vibrant in his role with our young people. His energy and faith serve as a light for our students, faculty, and me.

Ongoing emphasis is placed on educating our students in twenty-first century methods and technology. Edu City, E-Writing Roadmap and Tech 3 Literacy integrate curricular skills and needs with technology resources. Through our national award we received Smart Suites, an advanced classroom technology aide. We're so proud to add this to our learning tools. We have updated program materials and texts including Math, WV History and elementary Spanish. Our students' success is once again most evident in national standardized assessments and analysis. Academic life is coupled with the fine arts, sports and fun - a Winning Combination!

The National Catholic Schools theme - A+ for America - epitomizes the past and future success of our students. Together we are building future leaders for our church, state and nation. With a song sense of faith and service our young people are poised and prepared to advance in their education and formation. As the People of Peace we could not be prouder.

Peace be with you,

C'Ann Reilly, Principal

Our Lady of Peace Building Bridges

At Our Lady of Peace School, the message can be summed up into one simple statement: "What your child believes is as important as what they know."

"Our school exists to provide for the spiritual, academic, social, emotional and physical excellence of our students," said Principal C'Ann Reilly.

The school emphasizes education reaching beyond the traditional classroom.In addition to the core academic curriculum and challenges of language arts, social studies, mathematics, science and health, OLP students are exposed to a variety of experiences to enhance and fully develop their individual interests and talents.

Whether taking on the persona of your American Hero among your primary school peers; sitting down to a "Tea at the White House" with your preschooler host; or enjoying amazing performances of Polynesian fire dancers, while sampling some of the flavors of the region's traditional fare prepared by the middle schoolers; most would say a typical day at Our Lady of Peace School is not "typical."

Cultural arts, visual arts, competitive and lifetime sports, music and community services are all honored disciplines that make up this community of life long learners. What is impressive is that this approach has proven success.

Students at Our Lady of Peace continue to outperform their peers state-wide and nationally on standardized tests, earning scores placing among the best in the nation.

Their measurable accolades are not the only reason the school's population far outreaches its parish boundries. OLP parents and students choose the school, also because of its family-like setting and expectations.

Caring and compassion, fairness and justice, respect for self and others, responsibility, trustworthiness, and Christian citizenship are not only taught, but also lived.

Education belongs before kindergarten at OLP. The pre-school offers both 3-year-old and 4-year-old programs.

Four Years in a row... an OLP teacher's named:

Outstanding Teacher of the Year!!!

Marybeth Pollack - 2010 Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year

Pollack will be the Grand Marshall in the Wheeling Christmas Parade in November!

It may sound unbelievalbe, but it's true! For the fourth year in a row an Our Lady of Peace School teacher has been selected as the Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year. Deservedly earning the title this year is Marybeth Pollack, our pre-school teacher. Pollock was chosen from a long list of outstanding teachers who have dedicated their careers to nuturing and educating young people.

Pollack will be honored at Chamber events throughout the year, including serving as Grand Marshall of the Wheeling Christmas Parade in November of 2010. Mrs. Pollack follows on the heels of Mrs. Renee Schneid, Mr. Joe Holly and Mrs. Vicki Kirchner, who were recognized the past three years. Without a doubt - OLP teachers serve with heart!

MORE GREAT NEWS:

From Our Lady of Peace to Mars – A First! - Each year the fourth and fifth grade students of Our Lady of Peace School complete a robotics unit under the direction of Mr. Richard Pollack of the SMART-Center. Last spring the robotics unit came with a twist. As part of a program developed by the Near Earth Object Foundation and the SMART-Center, students are modeling the operation of a remotely controlled robotic Mars probe. Using readily available software and equipment, students are flying over, landing on, and roving about the surface of the red planet. This project was recently presented at the National Science Teacher Association Conference in New Orleans. Although this is a “virtual” activity, it is based on real data and graphics from various Mars missions, courtesy of NASA. The students are the first in the country to explore this innovative program.

“Our Lady of Peace takes great pride in providing exciting and innovative learning opportunities for our students” principal C’Ann Reilly says. She continues, “Our school is most appreciative and proud that this idea has “taken flight” at Our Lady of Peace School.”

Congratulations OLP, you are the first school in the nation to complete this mission!

Partners Connecting - Our Lady of Peace School joined with Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce to host Connections Day. Partners in Education were invited to participate in classes focusing on fine arts, science and technology. Mrs. Debbie Stauver of Bayer Corporation visited Music Technobility class, Bell Choir and a Science class with a squid dissection. As part of a Career Awareness program, seventh grade students asked questions of job changes in industry based upon economics and technology.

Bayer Corporation sponsors NASA Space Mission and NASA E-Mission for Our Lady of Peace classes each year as part of a total partnership program. Principal, C’Ann Reilly, shares “Our school community was most excited to showcase the advancement in the arts, technology and science with Mrs. Stauver. Bayer Corporation’s support of our educational mission is most valued.”
